25 May 2009 Wissant France

I drove around Calais trying to change some U.S. Dollars to European Euros. I never heard so many "no’s" in my life. Apparently when the European Union was formed the banks stopped changing money. It was a function that was no longer needed. I finally found an ATM and was able to purchase 300 Euros. My day finally got better. I then rode my motorcycle from Calais to Boulogne-Sur-Mer. It was a drive along the shoreline. I stopped and checked out some WW2 German Bunkers along the way. Those bunkers were built with two and three feet thick concrete walls. I don’t believe when they were built they ever thought they’d get routed out. I also can understand why a flame thrower was such a valuable tool in silencing the guns in those bunkers. Once you shot the flame into the gun port, the gunner was set on fire and that was the end of him. At least the gun stopped shooting for the moment allowing the good guys to throw a grenade into the gun port. That had to be one nasty job and everyone knew either you die or I die. That night I camped in Wissant, a city-run campground. This campground had no hot water, toilet paper or hand dryers in the bathrooms. The men’s urinals were outside in plain view. I kind of had to laugh about them.
